Unbeaten Jonson McClumpha is looking for win number seven when he appears at the Rainton Meadows Arena on March 7.
Slated to face Nottingham’s tough Tyan Booth on the undercard of Kirk Goodings’ English lightweight title defence against Gary Fox, Sunderland’s McClumpha is eyeing a career-defining next 12 months.
After losing a chunk of his career to a serious foot injury in 2012/13, the middleweight is back firing on all cylinders and determined to make up for lost time.
“I see 2014 as a major year for me,” explained Jonson, 23. “It’s got to come together now; I can’t have any more bad luck! By the end of the year I want to be in the British title mix for definite.”
The Mackem’s immediate fighting future is already planned out. After his Rainton Meadows slot, McClumpha heads into the biggest test of his career when he faces fellow prospect Lewis Taylor on the Stuart Hall vs. Martin Ward world title fight bill on March 29.
If he can beat 12-fight unbeaten Taylor, the Wearsider will gather some serious career momentum. For now, though Jonson, isn’t looking past his next fight.
“I’m hoping to put on another classy performance for my supporters. The last time I boxed there [the Rainton Meadows Arena] I wasn’t even hit! I think it’s going to be a cracking night with a cracking atmosphere and I can’t wait to be involved.”
“Jonson has had an unlucky time with injury,” explained promoter Phil Jeffries. “He was building a name for himself before his foot problems, but he looks back to his best now. McClumpha will be in an entertaining fight against Booth, and the headliner between Goodings and Fox will be a surefire war.”
