Liam Cameron (pictured alongside Dennis Hobson) flies ‘down under’ – and under the radar – on November 25 when he takes on Zac Dunn for the vacant Commonwealth super-middleweight title at the Melbourne Pavilion.
Unbeaten local man Dunn has earned himself a fearsome reputation, with 18 early finishes from his 22 starts, but ‘Cannonball’ Cameron says the 25-year-old ‘Aussie’ has never faced anyone of his calibre.
Cameron, 19-4 (7), has fought for the title before, coming up short on points against Lancashire’s Luke Blackledge in April 2015. The ‘Steel City’ fighter insists though that this is his time, and is warning Dunn that a first career defeat is coming his way.
“Fighting away in Australia will be even better for me because it’s a chance to go over there and prove myself,” said Liam. “I won’t feel any pressure from the crowd, it doesn’t matter if they boo or cheer, it’s not going to matter. There’s no pressure on me, I’m just going out there to win. People might think ‘look at Dunn’s record’ but I’m definitely going over there to win and I believe I will.
“The people he’s been in with and knocked out, I’d have done the same to them. I think there’s a level and British fighters are better fighters, and that’s not being disrespectful. In my head, this fight was meant to happen. I’ve had bad luck in the past with pullouts, training over Christmas and not working. I’ve been ticking over in the gym though and thinking ‘something’s going to come up’ and this fight is too good to be true.
“I’ve been told if I win this fight I’ll be fighting for the IBO championship, so it’s giving me a good boost and I can’t wait to fly over there.”
