In the latest British boxing news; undefeated Tommy Frank, 9-0 (1), will fight for the vacant Commonwealth Super Flyweight Title on March 15, against Scotland’s Ross Murray, 9-2 (1) – on a show promoted by Dennis Hobson.
Frank will get home advantage for the bout, with the pair contesting the belt at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Arena, and promoter Hobson is hoping – if Tommy comes through – it will be the launchpad onto the world scene.
Originally scheduled to be fighting on February 22 in Sheffield, that show has now been cancelled, with Tommy topping the bill on this upcoming March 15 date.
“Tommy’s last fight was an eliminator for the Commonwealth Title, and he had a good win,” explained Hobson. “I’ve been lobbying the Commonwealth for Tommy to get a shot at Australia’s Andrew Moloney, who was the champion. Moloney has now decided he wants to go onto the world picture, so he’s relinquished the title, which has put Tommy in the frame to fight for the vacant belt.
“We’ve managed to secure a deal with Ross Murray, who’s already contested the Commonwealth Title at flyweight. Ross is an experienced opponent for Tommy because he’s already fought some top-quality opponents like Sunny Edwards and Jay Harris. He’s already operated at that kind of level, although he was beaten, he has that experience.
“This fight is a marker for Tommy. It will show us what level he’s at, and how far we think he can go. The Commonwealth is a major title, but it’s not where we want to stop, we want to consolidate and defend the title, but hopefully Tommy develops and we get him onto the world scene. I’ve done it a few times already with kids at this kind of weight, like Jamie McDonnell and Stuart Hall, both of whom won world titles under me. So that’s what I’m looking towards, but it’s a process, and winning the Commonwealth puts you in the mix.
“Ross will be a good test for Tommy. He has moved up to super flyweight for this opportunity, and he’ll be hoping that this weight will suit him better. This is as big an opportunity for Ross as it is for Tommy, and we know that fighters take these opportunities with both hands. But, this is an important fight for Tommy and he should beat Ross, if he’s as good as we think he is.
“We might also be signing a world class fighter, not British, to our stable soon and could add him to the bill too. This show is also likely to be on Freesports, to be confirmed. So, watch this space over the coming weeks.”
