Tommy Frank is hoping to emulate his beloved Sheffield United by moving into the top tier of the boxing world.
Currently the Commonwealth Super Flyweight Champion, the huge ‘Blades’ fan will fight for the vacant World Boxing Council International Silver Super Flyweight Title on September 20, live on Freesports.
With United promoted to the Premier League last season, Frank takes on Thailand’s Aran Dipaen at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Arena and, if successful, will move up the WBC rankings.
Currently undefeated in 11 fights, the 24-year-old can’t afford to take his Thai opponent lightly though. Dipaen, 28, may have only been pro for a year, but he hasn’t hung around – already boasting five KOs from six wins, with just a single defeat on his ledger.
Also co-headlining on the bill will be Barnsley’s Josh Wale. The former British Bantamweight Champ is now campaigning at featherweight where he is hoping to claim more title honours.
“My manager Dennis Hobson was kind enough to invite me to Sheffield United’s pre-season friendly with Matlock Town, where he is the Chief Executive,” explained Tommy. “I met [manager] Chris wilder, had a chat, and the players are all big boxing fans and will be following my journey.
“I’ll be working closely with United, which I’m delighted about because I’ve supported them since I was a boy. It’s the perfect mix, they are in the Premier League now, and I’m working my way up the boxing ladder. It’s a match made in heaven.”
Dennis Hobson Promotions, in association with JJ Crump, present an evening of boxing at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Arena on September 20. Topping the bill will be Sheffield’s Tommy Frank and Barnsley’s Josh Wale.
