In conjunction with Fight Academy and Kynoch Boxing Promotions, the Fightzone cameras headed to the exquisite Trump Turnberry venue, in Turnberry, for a double dose of fight action – showcasing some of the best young talent ‘North of the Border’.
Topping the action on Friday February 18 was big-punching cruiserweight David Jamieson (pictured) in his first title fight. The 30-year-old, who looks like he could be the next big thing on the British 14st 4lbs scene, faced Swedish champion Samo Jangirov for the IBO International belt over 10 rounds and was predicting an early finish! Also appearing on the card was the undefeated – and extremely talented – Commonwealth Featherweight Champion, Nathaniel Collins.
Saturday February 19 saw the welcome return of top prospect, John Docherty – a top amateur, a Commonwealth Games medallist and a fighter that manager Sam Kynoch believes will be British Champion within just a few fights.
The Montrose man was due to face Ghana’s Super Middleweight Champion Mawuli Folivi in a bout that promised to be an explosive dust up. However, visa issues scuppered that contest, meaning John took on late replacement Kristaps Zulgis. The experienced British-based Latvian had over 30 fights on his ledger and just six stoppage defeats coming into the contest … could John do what many others haven’t and finish Zulgis inside-the-distance?
