Louise Orton is touted to be one of the hottest prospects to turn over in the women’s fight game and has a huge future ahead of her in the pro ranks if her amateur career is anything to go by.
The 30-year-old’s list of amateur achievements is as long-as-your-arm and included Southern Counties, Haringey Box Cup, and Three Nations titles, as well as being the England Boxing National Elite Lightweight Champion in 2019.
A Masters Graduate as well as a Mental Health Nurse, the Kent fighter from Chatham’s renowned St Mary’s ABC makes her pro debut on Friday March 4 at the Tower Hotel in Tower Hamlets, LIVE on Fightzone.
Find out more about the future star ahead of the night:
First started boxing? I began kickboxing at age 12 and then transitioned over to boxing when I was 18. I made the change because female boxing got accepted into the Olympics which meant there would be a lot more opportunities in boxing compared to kickboxing.
How many bouts did you have? Win/lose? Which amateur club?
1) I think I had 38 bouts, lost 10.
2) I boxed for St Mary’s ABC in Chatham, Kent.
Favourite all-time fighter? I liked Michael Katsidis, mainly because of his ring entrances of wearing gladiator helmets etc. but he was also very entertaining to watch.
What are your strengths and weaknesses as a boxer? My strengths as a boxer are that I am normally a front foot aggressive fighter who loves going to war, however I have the ability to adapt my style when required. This will be evident in my debut because the game plan is for me NOT to go to war but to use my range and to keep it long and simple. My weaknesses are that because I still have to work, I cannot give my all to training and sometimes I struggle to fit everything in which frustrates me because all I want to do is train and this sometimes makes me doubt myself because I feel I haven’t always been able to train as much as I would have liked to.
What’s the hardest thing about being a pro fighter (so far)? Being female! Females have it so much harder in comparison to the men. There are massive pay inequalities and it seems to be that it doesn’t matter whether you can box or not, as long as you can flaunt it then you’ve got more chance of getting opportunities than those who are good boxers. It’s all about money and publicity sometimes rather than the actual sport. Another thing that’s been hard is the empty promises from those involved in the sport. Everyone wants to sell you the dream to then only let you down. I’m grateful to my manager Sam Kynoch, and to Fightzone and Dennis Hobson for finally getting me my debut. I’ve been let down so many times before by previous managers with shows being cancelled for various reasons, so the fact that I am finally getting to make my debut after two years is magical!
What weight do you see yourself winning belts at? I am currently super featherweight however I am open to options of moving down or up if the right opportunities arise.
Which current British fighters are impressing you the most? I was impressed by Chantelle Cameron’s last performance against Mary Mcgee. What a war. Very exciting fight.
Name one UK fighter you would like to face in 2022? The one I was hoping to face was Terri Harper however she has now moved up to lightweight so not really sure now.
Your favourite meal? Indian Takeaway all day long! I could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I also love Turkish and Mexican food. Stop making me think about food haha.
Favourite film? Tricky one as I have a few but I think it’s going to have to be Bridesmaids….hilarious.
Which actor would you choose to play you in a movie about your life? I love Melissa Mccarthy…she is my favourite actor and I think she would find a way to make everything in my life comical.
Favourite city? London…..absolutely love it. Staying there for the weekend after my fight and also coming back again on Wednesday for my birthday
Your job outside of boxing (if you have one)? I am a senior mental health nurse working in forensic services (currently a prison).
Your boxing ambitions? What do you want to achieve in the sport? Everything! I want to challenge for and win every possible title. I want to be number one and I will give my all until I reach the top. I would love to have the opportunity to box on the big platforms, and even have the chance to box in Vegas…what a dream that would be.
Who is your biggest inspiration? I think most females would have a similar answer here….Katie Taylor. She has done so much for female boxing and is the one everyone looks up to. She has created a legacy and paved the way for us females.
Tell us an unusual fact about yourself? I can’t do press ups lol my body just doesn’t allow it. I don’t think I have ever done a proper press up in my life haha.
What is the first thing you’d buy if you won the lottery? A holiday! I love holidays.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time? I hope within five years I would have various titles in boxing and would have achieved everything I set out to do. So honest answer is, I would probably be settling down having a family by this point. Family is massively important to me, I am very close with my family and I would love to have a little family of my own one day.
What is the meaning of life? To me the meaning of life is to be happy, to have as much fun as possible, and to make as many memories as possible. Life is too short to be unhappy. I have a HUGE bucket list and I hope to experience as many things as possible in life and to explore the world. I also think reproducing is very important so that life can continue and our children can be given the opportunity to live on this beautiful land. You never know when your time is up so you HAVE to make the most of things, good or bad, and remember that tomorrow is a new day. I am a strong believer in the Serenity Prayer – God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
