Despite already wowing Fightzone viewers with some top performances and impressive stoppage wins, Dean Sutherland says fans can expect even more from him now that he is a full-time pro.
The former electrician looked a class act in his last two outings on Fightzone – beating tough foreign opposition in Mexico’s Jose Antonio Delgado Velazquez and Italy’s Michele Esposito inside the distance to claim WBO and WBC fringe titles. This Friday (March 11) ‘Deadly’ Dean will be out to impress again when he takes on fellow Scot Corey McCulloch, 4-1-1, over 10 rounds at Aberdeen’s Beach Ballroom – again LIVE/FREE on Fightzone.
Now that the 23-year-old has managed to put his trade on the back burner and concentrate fully on punching-for-pay, the huge Aberdeen FC fan believes it’s just a matter of time before he gets in with some of the really big names in the welterweight division and is dreaming of some special nights at Pittodrie Stadium.
“Thankfully I’ve managed to get enough sponsorship now to give up being a ‘sparky’ and it’s improved me massively as a fighter. Everything is better – the way I’m training and the recovering in between, I’m absolutely flying at the moment. And the mental side of things is great, being able to spend more time with my family. You know what they say ‘a happy fighter is a dangerous fighter’, and that’s exactly how I feel!
“Hopefully I’ve impressed in those last two stoppage wins, but fans can definitely expect even more from me now. To be honest and being generous, I’d probably just give myself a ‘C’ for that last performance. I did make mistakes in it and I could have made it an easier fight.
“I’m really not looking to box any more than I need to, going forward. I’ll be prepared for 10 or 12 hard rounds, a war, but I’ll be looking for an early night now from the first round!
“I definitely want to fight for the British Title in the future, every British fighter does, it’s a gorgeous belt, the best out there. I want it, my coaches want it and I know my manager Sam [Kynoch] and Dennis [Hobson] wants it too.
Essuman [Ekow Essuman is the current British Welterweight Champion] is a good, good fighter and we’ve had a bit of back and forth. I respect him and if I keep winning then he eventually he’s going to have to face me. He’s defending his belt against Darren Tetley in April and I think Ekow will get him out of there in the first five rounds – he’s got too much of an engine and punches a wee bit too hard, but I’d back myself against either of them.
“I’m just concentrating on Friday’s fight and it’s absolutely brilliant to be fighting at the Beach Ballroom. It’s a lovely venue and is like the Scottish version of London’s York Hall. The atmosphere will be absolutely electric and I’m really excited for it. I’m a big Aberdeen fan and would love to fight on the pitch at Pittdorie one day. I need to just concentrate on keep winning, pick up a big belt and that will all happen for me.”
